GOOD NEWS BAPTIST CHURCH

My parents, Mr. Jairo Evangelista Soares and Mrs. Maria Quevedo Soares were pioneers in planting Regular Baptist churches in the state of Rondônia.

In 1986, they ventured to Colorado D'Oeste to launch agricultural and livestock businesses. Simultaneously, they began hosting Bible studies for friends and neighbors, igniting the formation of a Baptist congregation. Unfortunately, that congregation didn't last much. All the new disciples, including Jairo & Maria, relocated to a neighboring city because of work. So, this relocation marked the beginning of their journey in Pimenta Bueno city where they started the Regular Baptist Church of that city.

The land we own today is a testament to a miraculous intervention by God in my mother's life. Facing paralysis and unable to walk, she required critical spinal surgery, which was financially daunting.

Fortunately, our Unified Health System (SUS) covered the cost of the surgery. In gratitude, my father used the funds he had earmarked for the surgery to purchase the land and build the church

The city of São Felipe D'Oeste arose from a land invasion at São Felipe Farm in the 1980s, leading to conflicts and eventual expropriation by President João Batista Figueiredo's decree in 1983. This decree declared the area as socially significant. Post-lot distribution, settlers opted to keep the name São Felipe for the colonization project in Pimenta Bueno.

Finally, on June 22, 1994, Governor Oswaldo Piana Filho signed Law No. 567, formally establishing São Felipe D'Oeste, carved out of Pimenta Bueno's territory.

Although the New Testament does not define the local church explicitly, we do find enough descriptions and details about the normal characteristics of functional local churches in the Bible in order to deduce a definition from all the existing evidence and testimony.

A local New Testament church can be defined as...

“… a group of professing believers in Christ who have been baptized and have organized themselves under the leadership of pastors and deacons for the purpose of carrying out the Great Commission; for conducting the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper; for building up of the body through the worship of God, the fellowship of believers, the teaching of the Word, and the exercise of spiritual gifts.” A local church is much more than merely “where two or three are gathered” (cf. Matthew 18:20).
